I'll be staying one month in Osaka as a visiting scholar, having a still unknown number of free days in which I'd like to travel to other parts of Japan, such as Tokyo and Kyoto. What kind(s) of ticket option would you advise me to consider buying?

Hi there,
Assuming you are eligible for the JR Pass, I think you could get a 7-day JR Pass. Then use it for a visit to Tokyo and Kyoto. I'd also recommend doing a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima, to see Miyajima and the Hiroshima Peace memorial park.
Kind regards,
Daniel
